2 CONT the 1st grade for two years (they had no kindergarden).

2 CONT well, so she passed me. I have vivid memories of falling

2 CONT the ice in Fish Creek and being pulled out by the older

2 CONT We took turns getting water from an outside well (with a

2 CONC laddle and
2 CONT bucket to drink from. There was no conventional
2 CONC bathroom, but

2 CONT front entry. Heat was supplied by a wood burning
2 CONC Franklin stove.

2 CONT There was an upstairs but it was rarely used. I recall

2 CONT had a Christmas play and, being the youngest and smallest

2 CONT I was chosen to play the jack-in-the-box. I had but one

2 CONT preparation for the opening of the rink. He asked us if

2 CONT like to earn some free passes by helping him clean and
2 CONC put away
2 CONT the skates, we jumped at the chance and earned enough
2 CONC passes over
2 CONT the next few days to skate through mid-summer.

2 CONT When my passes ran out, he said that anytime I wanted to

2 CONT at opening time and pass out skates, I could skate free

2 CONT session. I don't believe I ever missed an afternoon or

2 CONT fact that a friend of mine only needed a 60 to pass this

2 CONT class! (It is my understanding that New York State
2 CONC dropped this
2 CONT type of (individual) grading system a few years later.)

2 CONT The following school semester I was fortunate to get this

2 CONT 1st period. I took the school bus into Oneida and then

2 CONT to hitch-hiked (sometimes walk!) the 14 miles home. By

2 CONT winter I had managed to earn enough money to make repairs
2 CONC to my car
2 CONT (which I had wrecked in late summer) and drove to and
2 CONC from school
2 CONT the remainer of the semester.

2 CONT Although I do not remember her name, I am eternally

2 CONT History teacher who was kind enough to let me take the

2 CONT mid-term. My feelings are not the same for my

2 CONT attend the "1960" class reunions - screw the system!

2 CONT 1961 Jan I went to work for the Sylvan Beach waterworks, being
2 CONC hired by
2 CONT Floyd Darr. The pay was excellent at $1.45 an hour, much

2 CONT than the minimum wage of $1.00/hr. I worked the midnight
2 CONC to 8:00
2 CONT A.M. shift at the plant at the Y-hill, keeping the pumps
2 CONC going to
2 CONT prevent the building from flooding. In mid-February, the
2 CONC labor
2 CONT board forced them to lay me off (fire me!) as I was still
2 CONC only age
2 CONT 17 and not allowed to work a night-shift! (MAJOR
2 CONC REJECTION # 2!)

2 CONT 1961 March I turned age 18 and immediately applied for enlistment in
2 CONC the Air
2 CONT Force. (I was determined that I was not going to get
2 CONC drafted
2 CONT into the Army for a two year hitch, so I fooled them and
2 CONT enlisted for four!) Eddie Britton and I qualified for
2 CONC their
2 CONT top electronics school but had to wait until August 21st
2 CONC for
2 CONT an opening. I returned to work at the Sylvan Beach
2 CONC Midway.

2 CONT 1961 Aug 21 Eddie shipped out, I didn't! My parents had dropped us
2 CONC off at
2 CONT the Air Force center in Syracuse and drove on home. A
2 CONC final
2 CONT (short) physical was given just before swearing in and
2 CONC departure.
2 CONT I had a mild case of strept (sp?) throat and they
2 CONC informed me that
2 CONT I could not ship out and that I would have to return when
2 CONC it has
2 CONT cleared up. (MAJOR REJECTION # 3!)

2 CONT I had sold my car and by late October spent the proceeds
2 CONC (usually
2 CONT in one bar or another), believing any day now the school

2 CONT have an opening. Worse yet - my girlfriend had not

2 CONT on" (MAJOR REJECTION # 4!). Finally, in early November,

2 CONT furthermost to the north was built by Francis and Iva Money, and was

2 CONT post office, Iva being the postmistress. It was next owned by Charles

2 CONT Thelma Koch, thence by Principie (son David), thence by Louis Hickey
