Introduction

Our intention: to increase video literacy. It's no surprise that television commands more and more attention in our culture; instead of just consuming television, however, we can take a critical approach to the video medium. Back in the late 1800s and early 1900s, the emergence of public libraries, cheaper publishing and increased education led to the establishment of the written book as the "unit of literacy" (UOL) in American society. Just as it takes a studied approach to write a book or an essay (developing the content by use of an internal structure that links words to sentences to paragraphs), it's also possible to create a video that makes sense... that makes an impact... that tells a story. Therefore, as "video" becomes its own UOL, we need to provide the tools for understanding its use, its creation, and its distribution. And students -- already in preparation for the future -- are the ideal candidates for sharing these tools.
