Bridge Refugee Services, founded in 1982, is a nonprofit organization working with many denominations and faith communities in the Chattanooga, Knoxville and Tri-Cities areas of East Tennessee. The first suboffice was opened in Bristol in 1992; a second suboffice was opened in Chattanooga in 1996. The creation of Bridge brought expanded services and national affiliation to the existing cluster of East Tennessee churches which had been welcoming refugees since the 1970's. Bridge resettles refugees through Church World Service (CWS) and Episcopal Migration Ministries (EMM).

Bridge assists refugees and asylees through church sponsorships and early employment. Prior to a family's arrival, sponsors arrange for housing, household items, food, job interviews, etc. to help the family begin making Chattanooga its home. We also work at increasing global awareness through our presentations to churches and through media contacts. Over 350 refugees from Bosnia, Cuba, Sudan, Vietnam, and the Ukraine have been resettled in Cleveland and Chattanooga since the opening of the Chattanooga office. Our current resettlement goal is to resettle 80 refugees per year. Our program includes a wide variety of services, including case management, working with volunteers (recruitment, training and coordination), employment assistance, immigration assistance (including family reunification, adjustment of status from refugee to permanent resident, overseas travel documents or citizenship questions) and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. Through a grant from the Tennessee Department of Human Services, Bridge continues to work with refugees after the initial resettlement period is over, up through their fifth year in the United States. Through the case management services of the DHS Case Manager, a refugee can receive assistance with job upgrades, job referrals, ESL class referrals and referrals to community social service agencies.
